Building Contractor Fined for Breach of Asbestos Regulations

A Glasgow building contractor has been prosecuted by the HSE for breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 after failing to identify that a kitchen cupboard door contained asbestos. The contractor was in possession of an Asbestos Refurbishment Survey for the property, but he had failed to realise that the door had not been considered as part of the survey. An employee then cut through the door, accidentally releasing asbestos fibres in to the air. This incident should act as a timely reminder for all contractors not only of the need to carry out asbestos surveys before undertaking any kind of refurbishment works, but also to carefully review and check the contents of the asbestos survey to ensure that ALL work areas have been included.
