Your Construction or Building Health and Safety Advisor should be able to demonstrate compliance with each of the above, but unfortunately many simply do not. We’ve encountered everyone from Hotel Receptionists to Retail Staff to Production Workers and others, most of whom have never actually worked in the construction industry, but suddenly claim to be experts. Worse still they’ll often be poorly qualified having completed short IOSH or NEBOSH introductory courses, which to those outside of the Health and Safety industry may look impressive, but in reality hold very little worth.
It really is a case of making sure you complete your due diligence, you’ll know if you’ve completed an SSIP Accreditation for CHAS; SMAS or SafeContractor etc that they will want evidence that you’ve assessed your sub-contractors competence, but at present, few checks are ever made on the competence of your Health and Safety Advisor, but that is changing, so don’t get caught out.
