We’ve been working as Construction Health and Safety Advisors and consultants for around 20 years, we provide Health and Safety Consultancy services to builders and contractors all over the UK as well as London. And even before we started trading as Health and Safety Consultants our Principal Health and Safety Advisor was working on construction sites and in design offices as a Chartered Civil Engineer throughout the UK. Your Construction or Building Health and Safety Advisor should be able to demonstrate compliance with each of the above, but unfortunately many simply do not. We’ve encountered everyone from Hotel Receptionists to Retail Staff to Production Workers and others, most of whom have never actually worked in the construction industry, but suddenly claim to be experts. Worse still they’ll often be poorly qualified having completed short IOSH or NEBOSH introductory courses, which to those outside of the Health and Safety industry may look impressive, but in reality hold very little worth.
It really is a case of making sure you complete your due diligence, you’ll know if you’ve completed an SSIP Accreditation for CHAS; SMAS or SafeContractor etc that they will want evidence that you’ve assessed your sub-contractors competence, but at present, few checks are ever made on the competence of your Health and Safety Advisor, but that is changing, so don’t get caught out.
